How to Avoid the Christmas Blues

While it’s principally the season to be jolly, Christmas time can create considerable stress for many people. There’s probably going to be plenty of purchases, more hangovers than usual, and a few trips across the country to see friends or relatives. While burning the turkey and ruining the Christmas dinner is another thing to add to the Christmas headache, there are plenty of ways that you can avoid a stress filled festive period – here are a few pointers:

Plan Your Time

Take out your diary, or maybe even your advent calendar, and do some serious time management. Note down days that you’ll be away, and days where you’ll be able to shop. Shopping on the high street during Christmas time can be highly stressful, and it comes as highly recommended to do some sooner rather than later. Rushing around buying presents on Christmas Eve is a way to buy the wrong things and spend more money than you’ve planned thanks to stress.

Prepare Early

It’s not just shopping for presents that will ease your mind. Be sure to also get your groceries nice and early. Getting a freezer stocked with your turkey and Christmas puddings a month in advance will save you going in the far busier periods building up for the big day. Also, if you have guest coming to spend the festive period with you, then prepare the guestroom early. If you leave it at least a few days before they arrive then that unwanted visit from the in-laws might not be so bad.

Set a Budget

This is an absolute must for anyone in the run up to Christmas. For most people December is the most expensive month of the year, with each person spending over £400 on average on presents, and £600 when it’s combined with all the extra socialising and travelling about. You’ll have to draw up a budget of exactly what you can afford – and stick to it. Remember that you’ll also have those extra winter costs of higher heating bills that many people conveniently leave out; if you don’t consider these then you could be in for a nasty surprise come January. If you’re looking for a way to consolidate your Christmas debt ASDA Finance are offering 0% credit cards that have 0% on purchases for three months and 0% on balance transfers for nine months.

Buy Something Original

It’s often all very well to buy high street brands that everyone’s familiar with, but how about buying something that you haven’t seen before? A gift is more likely to have longevity if it’s unique and personal – something that no one else has. An added bonus is you can shop around plenty of markets for unique gifts, and they will normally be cheaper than branded goods; for a range of personalised gifts on the internet, check out Notonthehighstreet.co.uk.

Shop Online

Remove the clamour of the high street by shopping online. You’ll find that you won’t have to push through the crowds and queue for the checkout; instead you’ll be able to find goods quickly and easily without leaving your house. Filters on websites make it incredibly easy to find what you’re looking for straight away, and there are also plenty of online discounts to find and take advantage of. If you’re worried about fraud then you needn’t be, with internet retail sales going to make up some 16% of total Christmas sales there’s plenty of evidence that it’s safe. In fact, you’re just as likely to be a victim of fraud on the high street as you are on the internet.
