Flower Power for Mothers Day
Flowers are the most popular of all Mothers Day gifts. Along with chocolates, they represent adoration, love, and care. Across the world mums are given the most exquisite bouquets. While it’s clear thatmums are the best and deserve all this thanks and praise, it’s worth taking a moment to look at the story behind this absolutely classic gift.
Before we go and buy our bouquets, it’s a nice idea to try and trace the history of the day itself. Why do we say it with flowers?
So, with just a tiny dip into the past, it’s suggested that the annual party that falls around Mother’s Day, or the idea of it, has been with us for some time. In Ancient Greece, the mother of all the Gods, Rhea, was celebrated when spring arrived. With spring came flowers and with flowers came gifts. The Ancient Romans had Cybele, a mother Goddess-figure who was celebrated around the same time, with sweet honey cakes and the sharing of flowers. And here’s a nice touch too: in the middle-ages, children across Europe returned home from working as apprentices, picking wild-flowers along the way for their waiting mothers. The journey had the nickname ‘going-a-mothering’.
These are just little tasters but they show that the bouquet, the posy, the garland has been used as a token of love for centuries. The gift is the classic straight form the heart gesture. Carnations are a pretty standard choice for Mothers Day flowers, as are violets. But flirt with tradition, in fact, the more personal the better and your selection should be as lovely and unique as your mum. With that in mind, it might be fun to have a look around.
Interflora has bunches and bunches of glorious bouquets that are exploding with lilies, roses, freesias and carnation, and tulips.
