And here’s a nice touch too: in the middle-ages, children across Europe returned home from working as apprentices, picking wild-flowers along the way for their waiting mothers. The journey had the nickname ‘going-a-mothering’.

These are just little tasters but they show that the bouquet, the posy, the garland has been used as a token of love for centuries. The gift is the classic straight form the heart gesture.
